From staff reports

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore continues its 50th anniversary activities with a snowshoe and/or cross-country ski on Saturday, Feb. 8 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Dune Climb. Join park rangers and volunteers from the Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes and experience the park after dark as you snowshoe or ski along the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail under the full moon. Bring your sense of adventure, enjoy a trail lit by luminaries, warm up by the fire, and engage with our knowledgeable rangers and volunteers. The event is free with a park pass.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their own cross-country skis and/or snowshoes for the Heritage Trail event. Snowshoes will be loaned on a first-come, first-served basis. Park rangers will provide information along the route. There is no advanced registration needed. Luminaries and a full moon will light the trail, however, visitors are encouraged to bring a flashlight or headlamp and wear layers.

While skiing and snowshoeing are dependent on snow, this event will take place regardless of snow conditions. In the case of a lack of snow, rangers will still be stationed along the trail providing information to those hiking.

The National Lakeshore is planning special programs and events each month in 2020. Look over the calendar of events to discover anniversary programs and activities at https://www.nps.gov/slbe/planyourvisit/calendar.htm. Share your 50th anniversary adventures on social media using #SleepingBear50.
